AUGUSTA, June 26, 2018 – The Augusta 706ers are proud to announce that Augusta native William Avery will be taking over head coaching responsibilities for their upcoming inaugural season.
Augusta Professional Sports, LLC, the parent company of the Augusta 706ers, had already reached out to the former Duke University star and 1999 NBA first round draft pick to run the team’s administrative basketball operations. After a second round of negotiation, William Avery agreed to take the reigns as Head Coach. Scott Killebrew, President and CEO of the Augusta 706ers, said, “We are really excited to have Will Avery as our head coach. He brings a huge amount of talent and experience to our organization, and he has a passion for both basketball and the city of Augusta. His dedication to this city, and his track record of public service to young basketball players in the CSRA is unmatched, we are so glad to have him take on this new challenge at the professional level.”
Will Avery played under head coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University, and was drafted 14th overall in the 1999 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played in the NBA until 2002, then signed with SIG Strasbourg, and played for various European clubs until his retirement from professional Basketball in 2012. This will be Mr. Avery’s first attempt at coaching a professional club.
